Jon Hamm Gave Up 60% of His ‘Confess, Fletch’ Salary to Pay for Filming After Financiers Passed and Said Nobody Would Care About It News

Director Greg Mottola:

“Everyone said, ‘I don’t know that this kind of comedy works in this day and age. They just had a kind of like, ‘Who’s Fletch? I don’t think anyone cares anymore.’

"So, basically, what we did is Jon gave back 60 percent of his salary to the budget. I gave back some of my salary, not as much as Jon because he’s richer than me and I’ve got three kids. And we bought three more days of shooting. We got it up to 30 days in Boston and one day in Rome. And we said, fuck it, we’re insane, we’re dumb. We’re going to make this movie. And then Miramax really supported us, creatively. They didn’t fight us on people we wanted to cast.”

It is a movie that shouldn't work, but somehow really does. It is much better than it deserves to be for being a "sequel" to a movie almost 40 years old. Seriously it is worth seeing.

It’s more like movie based on novel. Fletch started as a series of novels. This is based on the book of the same name.

13

u/md2b78 1d ago

This movie is almost like performing the novel page-by-page. The first two fletch films were classics. But this one is even more true to the source. Hamm kills it.

10

u/EShy 2d ago

It's based on the same source material but I don't think it has anything to do with the Chevy Chase movie

u/Nonalcholicsperm 2d ago

Yeah but injected it with what? Don't leave us hanging here.

Well Weinstein certainly wasn’t hung by all accounts. Unlike Jon Leg of Hamm

117

I saw him guest on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and the hosts had the same reaction when they found out he's personable and charming AF. He basically charmed the whole audience by being super nice, personable, and friendly and the hosts were all like "wtf, this isn't fair, you're talented, super good looking, AND you're that charming too?!"

16

u/Joseluki 2d ago

wtf, this isn't fair, you're talented, super good looking, AND you're that charming too?

And still took him until his 40s to get his real opportunity on TV, then on his 50s in hollywood.

Don’t get wrong. Harvey Weinstein is the absolute scum of the earth and deserves to rot with maggots in a cell.

But, he definitely had an eye for production, and a lot of great films would not have existed without his support.

u/miltonite 2d ago

Just for the uninitiated, what is a Fletch movie?

186

u/WackFiend 2d ago

Fletch is a series of books from the 70s/80s, one of which was adapted into a film starring Chevy Chase in 1985. While the movie was a hit, a lot of people didn’t like that it strayed too far from the feel of the book. From what I have heard, this film and Hamm stay more true to the original character and not Chevy Chase’s interpretation.

57

u/slingmustard 2d ago

TIL I'm old.

72

u/herehaveaname2 2d ago

Am I misremembering, or were there two Chase movies?

77

u/WackFiend 2d ago

There was Fletch! in 1985 and then Fletch Lives in 1989, but I don't believe Fletch Lives was based off of any of the books.

7

u/pregnantbaby 2d ago

Since you’re the expert to ask, what was Son of Fletch? A reference I heard in a comedy at some point?

7

u/jetogill 2d ago

One of the books , like 8th or 9th.

8

u/gatsby365 2d ago

And Jason Lee was trying to get it greenlit

7

u/casaway78 2d ago

Jason Lee and Kevin Smith were actually trying to work on Fletch Won which is prequel to the original Fletch. If memory serves, there were 2 prequel books, but the movie never got off the ground.

I worked on the movie last year, filming in Boston. Jon was very professional and easy to work with. One day he showed up and was introduced to the the actor (Roy Wood jr) he was doing a scene with, they never met before. They talked for few minutes and were called to set. They proceeded to act out a 10 minute dialogue as good as it gets. Did it two more times, because well you have to. It was three pages of dialogue! My last movie 1/8 of a page was normal. I’ve worked on movies for 33 years, he’s in my top 10 to work with. Funny thing I read all the Fletch books back when they came out. Serial books, around 185-200 pages was our version of say a Netflix series. I got paid for my work on the show, I hope it does well so he gets his.

80s movie with Chevy Chase doing Chevy Chase things. Honestly, they're probably right that this kind of movie doesn't work anymore. But Jon Hamm is probably the one to do it if someone's going to.

66

u/Puppytron 2d ago

You're right, the 80s movies were movies about Chevy Chase doing Chevy Chase shit loosely wrapped in the plot of a Fletch book.

Hamm and Co are adapting the book and he is playing the character from the book. He's not playing Chevy Chase. So hopefully it will be something that works today.

I’m sure they’ll take money on the back end if it does well. I’m super excited to see it! Jon doesn’t seem to be a dick IRL like Chevy

24

u/Schnevets 2d ago

He actually showed up to a comedy night I went to in Brooklyn while Mad Men was on the air. He just enthusiastically talked to the emcee for a while and lingered around while some comics did their material. He was as friendly as could be, and everyone was so star struck, but there was a tug of war over the spotlight. He stayed around and talked to people after the show, too.

When he’d finish a pint while onstage, he would point to the glass and say “My beer is broken!!!” and get a refill. My friends thought it was hilarious and it became a running gag until we learned he checked into rehab about a month after that random encounter.

I'm a big fan of the Fletch books, and I think Hamm did a great job channeling the I. M. Fletcher I know from Mcdonald's books. It may not be as silly as Chase's Fletch, but it's truer to the spirit of the guy.

The plot also didn't match exactly to the book, but it did a pretty good job covering all the basics without it seeming forced.

I should mention that I haven't seen Hamm's acting in anything else (haven't seen Mad Men).

Madmen is fantastic, I’m not at all the office worker drama demographic but I can’t say enough good things about it. Each episode is like a little vignette where a top notch 60s playwright writes a 47 minute short story about american office life and the american condition in general, and they all kind of build off each other.

The whole cast is amazing, the two leads have moved on to film and one big TV role after another because they are amazing talents, and the supporting cast is just as good.

Spokespeople get paid super well because they generally aren't allowed to take any other role while they are the spokesperson.

besides the minions what *big* movie/tv has he done since Mad Men? He's definitely famous but I'm not sure he has had any *big* sources of revenue

Top Gun: Maverick

E: Also, dude is busy - commercials, cameos, guest spots, awards shows - and he is well-known for being very handsome and charming and funny. He gets paaaaaid.

R-rated comedy? I'm there. Maybe not in the theaters there, but I'll stream it, there. Jon Hamm and that guy with 3 kids needs to eat.

The movie wasn’t anything special but I really enjoyed it. Jon Hamm is my favorite actor though so I’ll see anything he’s in.

I think my favorite thing he has done has been his appearance (appearances?) on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast. Not that I don't like him as an actor, I just found him really entertaining as a podcast guest..

Watch Jon Hamm's episode of Travel Man. It's disgusting that someone with his body also has so damn much charm and general appeal.

He was amazing in Spontanianation. It was, it ended some time pre-Covid, a podcast hosted by Paul F Tompkins where Paul F Tompkins would interview a guest. Then Paul, and most of the time the guest, would do a long form improv with a group of improvisers. Jon Hamm’s episode is in my top three favorite episodes.
Edit: Yes it was the Storm Drain, or Sewers episode.

u/kronicfeld 2d ago

If I remember right he was the guest at a live show who was not expected to improvise but who ended up improvising as a guy stuck in a storm drain.

Also Spont used my “jury deliberations” location recommendation.

His guest spot on Curb Your Enthusiasm is maybe my favourite thing he’s done. So good.

It might have been Spontanianation I am thinking of honestly.

Hamm was on Comedy Bang Bang like at least once a year pre-Covid. Fletch was his first appearance since Covid.

Director Greg Mottola also confirmed a sequel to the Paramount revamp is in the works.

Fuck. Yes.

23

u/askyourmom469 2d ago

"In the works" doesn't mean it's been greenlit though. It just means it's being written and that (hopefully) conversations are happening. But only time will tell if it actually ends up coming to fruition, especially since Confess, Fletch hasn't exactly been a huge box office success.

"Who knows who Fletch is anymore?"

Uhhhh I'm 52 and have a lot of disposable income and would see a new Fletch movie anywhere anytime.

There may be a few of us

Word.

yea dog

I'm 43 and had this same thought, which is why I just got back from seeing it.

Verdict: very, very good. Hamm has a lot of Chase's mannerisms and timing down. Good storyline. No useless parts. If you liked the original, you'll like this.

I am so happy to see that the comments on this are not negative. I enjoyed the movie too. It wasn’t slapstick like chevy’s but also didn’t take itself too seriously.

Confess, Fletch is one of the few films being released this year that I have a legitimate desire to go to a movie theater and see.

It was good, people just want 100% masterpieces everything. If your expecting every movie to "change the game" your looking for disappointment.

27

u/markstormweather 2d ago

I love mid tier movies that are entertaining. A lot of masterpieces are amazing and boring at the same time. I’ll take fun and entertaining 9/10 times and if they happen to end up a masterpiece as well, awesome.

How good was it? Let me put it this way - my better half usually moans when we watch something and turns out to be limited series rather than a movie (very often on Netflix) - after we watched this she was like what is it just a movie, disappointed it wasn’t series. I agree the only disappointment was that it isn’t series.

u/JonPaula 2d ago

I said the same thing to my wife! We need a good comedic mystery procedural show.
